This was a project taken on in the winter of 2020 when Holly was invited to visit Tweenhills stud during their foaling season. This meeting was set up in preparation to exhibit at the Royal Ascot week of summer racing and presented Holly with the wonderful opportunity to work on a larger than life size portrait of a beautifully bred foal. This filly was sired by the late world champion ‘Roaring Lion’, voted horse of the year in 2018 and out of a beautiful dam ‘Common Knowledge’, both stars from Qatar Racing.
The foal portrait expresses deep sensitivity and potential power. In its handling the sculptural mark making is both open and deeply felt. The overall sculptural image presents an alert stance; one can feel energy in the pose as one has the sense the piece is about to step forward in a far from static bearing.
“For me this piece is not only about the power and elegance of these born athletes, but about the innocence and curiosity found in the eye of this filly.”
